Spiral notebooks at school?

I have a dilemma. I've been asking this before, but the answers were a little hard to understand. I'm attending a High School in California next summer, for a year - as an exchange student. I've been trying to watch Veronica Mars (a tv show) to see what kind of school supplies they use, and what they have in their high school lockers. Do I need one spiral notebook for each subject at school? Or, what is mostly normal to use as a notebook. And; how many composition books do I need?
