I am not sure what you are asking - the atmosphere in both is a very thin layer on top of the earth's surface. (whether land or water). The first picture is taken where you can get a good backdrop from space, yet the photographer is close enough where the atmospheric layer is very clear. The second photograph was taken from one of the probes sent far from the planet, and the atmospheric layer is too thin to see clearly on edge, although clouds are very visible on the sunlit side...
