My husband has started suffering from very hot ears. Can anybody help?

I know it sounds funny, but it is in fact causing him quite a lot of misery. It feels to him as if some heat regulating mechanism isn't working properly. He has to leave warm rooms and has to direct cold air onto them when driving. If he were a woman, and given his age, I would say hot flushes and menopause. Do men go through any mid life hormonal changes? Any suggestions about how he can calm them down would be gratefully received.
